CHAPTER TWELVE
Landhi Town, Sindh Province, Pakistan
Farouk Aziz completed his inspection of the trucks. All four were âarmy surplus,â meaning theyâd been sold to G-troop at a discount by the Pakistani government for use in operations meant to undermine the Indian economy or otherwise disrupt society in the continuation of their endless feud. Aziz had no idea why the two nations were at odds, beyond the basics of religion, and he didnât care. Although ostensibly a Muslim, like the rest of those who served Riyaz Geelani, he concerned himself primarily with worldly things and only prayed when there appeared to be a risk that he might die. Was Allah listening? Who knew? The trucks were standard 2.5-ton flatbed models, waterproof tarpaulins covering their cargo, which itself was wrapped in plastic inside sturdy wooden crates. The load of heroin, worth more than all three trucks of cannabis combined, would lead the convoy, with Aziz himself riding the shotgun seat. Or in this case, more properly, the AK-47 seat. Geelani had insisted that the guard be doubled, meaning that besides a driver and a shotgun driver, each truck would have two more gunmen riding in the cargo bay. Twelve automatic weapons and assorted sidearms would secure the drugs in transit. Nor would that be all. Farouk Aziz had been surprised to learn that they would have an escort to the border: two Land Rovers filled with riflemen provided by the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence. That nearly doubled the guard on their convoy until it crossed Korangi Creek and entered India, beginning their long journey through the mangrove country. At the border, theyâd be met by other vehicles, all strictly private, since the government of Indiaâat least officiallyâwas bent on driving G-troop to extinction. Unofficially, Riyaz Geelani paid good money to an ever-growing number of policemen, politicians and the like to keep his crime family in business, but it would not do for anyone to see soldiers escorting a narcotics caravan between Karachi and Mumbai. In spite of all the trouble they had suffered recently, Aziz did not expect an ambush on the road. The other raids, as far as he could tell, had all been aimed at stationary targets and had caught defenders with their guard down, unprepared. He frankly did not understand how two menâtwo, and one of them a foreigner at thatâcould wreak such havoc without being killed or captured. If anything, he hoped they would attack the convoy, giving him a chance to punish them and prove himself worthy of a promotion into G-troopâs upper ranks. Why not take full advantage of adversity? With that in mind, he had handpicked his convoy guards, selecting only those he personally knew as seasoned killers, fearless men who kept their wits about them under fire, all former soldiers or ex-tactical officers from various divisions of Indiaâs Central Armed Police ForcesâBorder Security, the Rapid Action Force, or COBRA, the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action. Aziz had staked his life on their ability to keep the shipment safe.
